Morocco is full of surfing spots, but as everywhere, not all of them are suitable for beginners. This article aims to list the spots for beginners less than 20 minutes drive from Azul Guesthouse.

How to define a beginner spot? In this selection, we have chosen beachbreak spots, i.e. waves breaking on sand. Moreover, the access is simple by going directly from the beach. Finally, the waves are not as fast and hollow as reefbreaks (waves breaking on rocks or coral).

Km17

In the continuity of the Crocodile, km17 is a very accessible beachbreak. Even if the waves may seem big at first glance, their power is medium to low. The wave is soft, which allows you to have time to take off. You will find a lot of peaks, suitable for all levels. To join the lineup, you just need to paddle out from the beach, so not the easiest spot when the swell is big.. The spot works best at mid-tide and high tide.

Devil’s Rock

Contrary to its name, this spot is not so diabolical. It’s a beginner’s spot with many surf rental companies and restaurants right next door. This spot works very well in light and heavy weather (even if it’s more complicated for beginners to get into the water because of the rocks). This spot has several peaks, the most popular for experienced surfers is stuck to the devil’s rock and creates a long straight line. Depending on the day, you can find one or two more on the left side of the beach. They both roll right and left. The spot works best at mid and high tide.

Crocodile

Located 50 metres to the right of devil’s rock, this is the name of the entire beach. It owes its name to the shape of Taghazout’s point which forms a crocodile’s head. This long beach has many peaks that change regularly with the swells and currents. Here you have a wide range of choices to get into the water, peaks of right and left, both at the same time… You just have to walk a little to explore a whole new wave.

Panorama

Situated at the entrance of the village of Taghazout, 10min drive from the surf camp, Panorama offers you a long right wave accessible at all tides depending on the size of the swell. The wave will be stronger at low tide and gentler at high tide. Like almost all the spots on the Taghazout coast, you can access it by the beach or by the rocks for the more adventurous. The best possible swell for this spot is North-West. Moreover the spot is sheltered for North-North-East winds.

Camel Beach

Camel’s beach allows you to surf quality waves, even for beginners. You will have a view on the pointbreak of this beach: Camel Point which is impressive because it breaks along a big rocky overhang. Close to the beach, a beautiful right is waiting for you and you can find other peaks along the beach. The wave works best at high tide but can be surfed at any tide when conditions are good. For good conditions, a north-northwest swell is preferable and the spot is sheltered from northerly winds.

Desert Beach

A 15-minute drive from Azul Guesthouse, the Desert Beach awaits you. As its name suggests, it is secluded and stretches for several hundred metres. Right next to the beach is Desert Point, which runs along the cliff to the right but is suitable for more experienced surfers. Back to the beach you will find several peaks, especially on the right side of the beach. The waves roll over a sandy bottom and there is little current. There is something for everyone as you will find left and right-handed waves.

Imsouane

It is in Imsouane, a fishermen village, that you will find the longest right in Morocco. There are several spots in Imsouane, more or less accessible. But the one that attracts the most people and has caused the most ink to flow is The Bay. Considered to be the longest right wave in the Northern Hemisphere, it can run for 800 metres from the harbour jetty to the beach. All you have to do is walk up to the peak. The wave starts on a rocky bottom but soon reaches the beachbreak. The wave is not very hollow, perfect for longboarding and all levels of surfing.
