Morocco is a surfing destination to put on your list if it is not already there. Morocco is one of the dream destinations that made a name for itself quite late on the world scene (about ten years ago). But with its more than pleasant climate, thousands of kilometres of coastline, rich food and perfect waves all year round, Morocco has earned its place in the hearts of many surfers. Will you be next?
Accessibility
Morocco is one of the northernmost countries in Africa, and is therefore very close to Europe. To land in Agadir, you will have a maximum of 4h or 4h30 flight time from most European countries. From France or Spain, it will take just between 2 and 3 hours of flight time to arrive in Agadir.
In addition to its proximity, Morocco is financially accessible. With its souks where you can find fruit and vegetables at 1€ per kilo or the many restaurants where you can eat a feast for less than 10€. In terms of transport costs, flights are accessible. You will easily find round trips at around 150€.
Surfing in the North
The North Moroccan coast is not the most famous for its surfing spots. Nevertheless, it remains rich in impressive spots. Casablanca gathers some of the best spots of the North coast. It should be taken into account that most of the spots are not for beginners and require a certain amount of experience. They are often rocky bottoms and quite powerful waves. If you go up to Tangier, you will still be able to find spots that are accessible to beginners, which break smoothly on a sandy bottom.
If you have an advanced level, you can visit Safi’s long tubular right (Ras Elfaa) which is powerful and very fast. This wave sums up the perfection of Moroccan spots. Safi’s wave is even one of the best waves in the world.
Surfing in central Morocco
The central coast of Morocco, where Azul Guesthouse is located, is the densest part of the country in terms of surfing spots. In the 5 kilometres north and south from the surfcamp, there are more than ten spots, and even more peaks. The famous Anchor Point is waiting for you and the pro surfers. But next to the frequented spots, with 10 or 15 minutes drive, you will find world class waves with plenty of place in the water.
In addition to having many waves of incredible quality, the level is heterogeneous. You will find both very difficult and dangerous waves (Dracula…) and beachbreaks accessible to all (Devil’s Rock, Crocro…). Most of the spots work as soon as the announced swell exceeds 1 meter and 11/12 seconds of period. The region remains a good representation of Morocco with a lot of right pointbreaks. It is however possible to find some magnificent left waves. Most often on beachbreaks. Even better! If you are a group of people with different levels, most of the beaches on the coast offer accessible beachbreaks with often a pointbreak in the continuity of the beach.
Surfing in Southern Morocco
Southern Morocco is the wildest part of the coast. There are large cliffs plunging down to rocky bottoms and some beaches below. In this southern part is also part of the desert. If you want to go on an adventure to discover waves without lineup people, the South of Morocco is waiting for you.
It should be noted that this part of the coast receives the full force of the Atlantic swell. The waves are thus on average bigger there than in the North or even on the side of Taghazout. The conditions are also more complex. World class waves may be waking up, but you’ll have to be more attentive to the weather forecast than anywhere else in Morocco.
The most famous spot in the south is Sidi Ifni which offers a magnificent beach with two lefts in beachbreak and the main wave, a pointbreak to the right breaking over the rocks. The show in the water will take you away from it all!
We hope this article will help you find the wave of your dreams in Morocco. We will be delighted to welcome you to our surf camp in Tamraght to help you discover our region.
